Reunion Island Sugar

Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island benefits from unique natural conditions for sugarcane cultivation: a tropical climate, fertile volcanic soils and high rainfall. Reunion Island sugar is produced through a fully controlled local process, from harvest to packaging. These advantages, combined with over two centuries of agricultural and industrial expertise, give Reunion Island sugar a quality reputation that extends far beyond the island.

Today, the local sugar industry relies on some of the most efficient production facilities in the world, successfully combining tradition and innovation. Thanks to this exceptional know-how, Reunion Island has become a leader in premium sugar production, with around 50% of its output consisting of high-end sugars.

Resulting from dedicated research and unique sensory expertise, the sector offers a broad range of unrefined specialty sugars—from light blond sugars, subtle and delicate, to dark brown sugars with intense caramel and licorice notes, along with a variety of amber- and copper-hued brown sugars. Renowned for their aromatic richness, purity and consistency, this expanded product range meets the expectations of both professionals and consumers seeking authenticity and quality.

Driven by a family-based agricultural model deeply rooted in the territory, the Reunion Island cane-sugar sector is organized around two high-performance sugar mills that process the cane grown locally. For more than 20 years, Loiret & Haëntjens has relied on this strong partnership, built on trust, proximity and high-quality service.

We work in close collaboration with industry stakeholders to secure supply, monitor agronomic developments and meet the specific expectations of our clients.

Although located outside the continent, Reunion Island is an overseas department of France. Sugar produced locally therefore holds European product status, which facilitates its circulation within the European Union. This is a major logistical and regulatory advantage, especially for clients seeking traceable, stable origins that comply with EU standards.

Furthermore, the entire sector adheres to the most demanding European standards—whether in food safety, quality or sustainability—ensuring that buyers receive products meeting some of the highest requirements in the world.
